Job Description:

DUTIES

Under general direction, of the Veterans Administration laws and the County Commissioners, performs supervisory and administrative duties in assisting veterans and their dependents to secure benefits to which they are entitled under the various laws and regulations.  Plans, organizes and is otherwise responsible for procedures, policies, budgets, staff requirements, etc. within the policies and laws set forth by the Veterans Administration Code of Law  Assists in appraisal of veterans and/or their dependents to determine eligibility for compensation, insurance, hospitalization, education, and employment benefits.  May perform counseling as needed.  Interprets and makes decisions regarding application of Veterans Administration Laws.  Supervises and assists in the maintenance of current files on veterans, wives, widows, dependent parents, and orphans.  Consults with doctors and public and private agencies on current interpretations and procedures.   Performs other related duties as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

EXPERIENCE:

Two years experience in veteran claims work or related field.  Must be a Veteran of a recognized United States military service branch with honorable discharge to be considered for the position.  If hired, will occassionally have contact with and work with unpredictable potentially violent clients and will have occassional exposure to communicable and contagious diseases.

 

EDUCATION:

High school graduate or GED equivalency supplemented by advanced training in business administration or related field equivalent to one year of college.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Considerable knowledge of Veterans Administration rules and regulations.  Considerable knowledge of United States Code of Veterans laws and related State of Texas laws.  Considerable knowledge of public administration prinicples and practices.  Considerable knowledge of modern office management.  Ability to analyze and interpret veterans laws and policies.  Ability to supervise and direct the duties of several employees.  Ability to effectively counsel and communicate with persons applying for benefits.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public.  Please submit copy of DD214 with Johnson County Application for Employment.


GENERAL PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position without posing a direct threat to the health and safety of themselves or others.
